The Pipestone National Monument interpretive hike has much to offer, with a focus on the famous pipestone quarries that have drawn thousands of visitors over the past 400 years. A stop at the visitor center will educate you on the remarkable history of the region, Native American pipe making, and how pipestone carving and quarrying lives on today. Pipestone National Monument lies in prairie country where more than 300 plant species live, including prairie cordgrass and lanceleaf sage. The hike wanders through oak and ash woodland, along Lake Hiawatha and Pipestone Creek, and through remnants of tallgrass prairie past the quarrying site and large blocks of red quartzite that stand like sculptures along the trail.
