Just north of the city of Pipestone, this is a guided tour along prairie, bluff, and quarry alongside Pipestone Creek. The visitor center near the end of the road is a good place to learn more about native culture. Inside the center you find the human history of the native people of the area, the geologic history of the mineral, and the material most often used to create pipes and totems. The trail loop starts out the back door, but first pick up a Circle Trail brochure for a self-guided tour of the monument. You will walk along Pipestone Creek past Lake Hiawatha to the grove of trees, which hides a 30-foot Sioux quartzite ledge. This section holds some of the park’s favorite features, including some early graffiti scratched into the rock by Joseph Nicollet when he was on his mapping expedition.
