An easy, relaxing hike around a prairie, some woods, and ponds. Hyland Park Reserve is perhaps the busiest of the metro parks, with more than 400,000 people visiting annually. Fortunately, the park’s 1,000 acres are split into a couple of parts; the southern half, which offers recreational activities, and the quieter, less-visited northern part centered around Richardson Nature Center. The southern part has paved bike trails, boat rentals, a large picnic area, and a huge children’s creative play area. The northern section has a separate entrance and retains a degree of wildness within its boundaries, showcasing wetlands, prairies, and woods. Hiking the northern section’s woodchip trails, it is easy to forget that the park is literally surrounded by the city of Bloomington. Special attractions: Nature Center programs, prairie, and wildlife watching.

I love this trail...there are two 3/4 mile loops, one going through prairie, one through woods. Even though you are in an inner ring suburb you feel like you are out in the middle of nowhere. This part of the park (by Richardson Nature Center) gets the least traffic....some weekdays in the middle of the day it might just be you and wild turkeys!
