A lakeside trail that takes you from the impoundment that forms Hayes Lake to where the lake narrows to a meandering river. Hayes Lake State Park is located in the heart of one of Minnesota’s most overlooked wilderness regions—the hundreds of square miles of Beltrami State Forest’s peatlands and forests. Just south of the park lies the so-called Big Bog, 130 square miles of peatland, considered by many to be Minnesota’s most pristine place. And it will probably stay that way, since there are few hiking trails in this soggy world. Hayes Lake State Park, while not in the peatland itself, borders parts of the state forest and is easily accessible.
