A rolling trail that passes by (though not always alongside) many secluded lakes in the Chippewa National Forest. Of the nation’s planned long-distance interstate trails, the North Country National Trail (NCT) will be the longest. The route will eventually reach across the country, connecting New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota.
Much of the trail is still in the planning stages, but when completed, the final distance will cover about 3,200 miles. Here, within the Chippewa National Forest, the route runs for 68 miles, and of that, this hike covers only a short scenic portion. Special attractions: Wildlife and fishing on out-of-the-way lakes.
