A hike along a high serpentine ridge (an esker) that parallels Simpson Creek. This recreation area is named for Sam Simpson, who in 1908 began logging the area and built a network of forest roads in the process. Since much of the area is swampy, he probably did much of the cutting in the winter over the frozen ground. Today, many of the trails are also set up for winter-only use and they are allowed to become overgrown during the summer. Most intersections in the network are labeled with letters, which helps out greatly in what can be a confusing trail system. I found the most interesting path to be the fairly easy path along the esker. This follows Simpson Creek for about 1 mile, crossing the river, then running for a stretch on the esker’s ridge.
