When the state established this park in 1921, they appropriately named it Scenic. Fortunately, the place still lives up to its title. The park offers pine trees, pleasant trails around the lake, and panoramic views from the Chase Point Trail. The trail actually follows the upper ridge of an esker, which is one of those things that gets mentioned in geology books, but seldom elsewhere. Eskers are elevated, high ridges winding like snakes on the ground. They came about when glaciers covered the ground with a couple of hundred feet deep of ice. As the climate warmed, the glacier melted and created huge internal rivers, which also carried whatever rock or gravel that happened to be in the ice.
