The Bay View Hiking Trail is one of the longer trails in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, made up of four separate loops. The northernmost loop provides an outstanding view of the Lake Michigan shoreline and several offshore islands. The trail offers a mix of environments, including mature forests and the sandy dunes that give the area its name and appeal. Trailheads at opposite ends of the trail offer convenient access to visitors arriving from north or south. All loops are accessible from either of the trailheads. The dunes are at the feet of hikers once they reach Lookout Point.

This was a nice hike on some well-maintained trails. The trails can be a bit confusing. Check out one of the park's maps. The paths do, at some points, parallel roads, which slightly degrades the asthetics. However, overall, it was a very nice hike.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a unique park with fantastic lake views and interesting geography. It is nice to see lake shore areas preserved from development and set aside for use by all. This trail is well marked and quite easy to follow and it meanders through some excellent hardwood forest. Mosquitoes can be in an issue in the Spring but they tend to taper off with the heat of Summer. I would recommend a trip to "the dunes" to anyone passing through Michigan's lower Penninsula!
