Beautiful views of lake Superior and surrounding islands. Very rocky in some spots especially between three mile camp and Rock Harbor. Especially use caution when wet. My 18yr. old daughter slipped and fell twice as we hiked in a steady rain. Definitely worth the views.
Great scenery, too much civilization - boats, people, etc.
This is a great trail leaving the main starting point (Rock Harbor Lodge Area) int he Eastern half of the island. The trail is very rocky since it is along the coast and will require a nice fitting pair of boots. Great scenery all along the trail. For an easier departure or if you get caught in the rain (rocks can be slippery) you might try the Tobin Harbor Trail. We hiked this trail on our return trip. Alot easier (almost like a joggin trail) but the scenery isn''t as nice. We left the trail at the Mount Franklin Trail and proceeded over the ridge to Lane Cove. Can''t wait to get back!
Isle Royale is truly unique, even among our Naional parks. One can reach the park via boat from Michigan's Upper Penninsula or Grand Marais Minnesota. The Rock Harbor Trail is a standard starting point if you reach the island from Michigan. Moose are often seen along the trail and a lucky person may fall asleep to the sound of the island's howling wolves. The trail is very well marked and easy to follow. Expect to encounter a lot of mosquitos anywhere on the island.
