Honeymoon Island State Park is part of Islands State Park in heavily populated Pinellas County, Florida. But once you are on the Island, you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. I recommend a quick stop by the nature center before the hike.
The primay attraction to the trail is the birds. Osprey nests line the east section of the trail, ending with a bald eagle nest at the end (this nest closes a portion of the trail during mating season, but there is a viewing are to see the nest).
There is a small beach at the northern tip of the trail with a panoramic view of St. Joseph Sound. The west portion of the trail follows the shoreline of Pelican Cove where you can see a multitude of shore birds and an occasional porpoise. This portion of the trail is often wet during heavy rains and extreme high tides.
Overall, it is a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of the Tampa Bay area.
