Just a half-hour drive north of the city of Winston-Salem is a natural wonder jutting up from the earth. Pilot Mountain State Park’s namesake—the 200-foot-high monadnock (an isolated rock mountain)—is something impressive to see. While you cannot climb to its summit, the giant rock can be viewed from many vantages, including the two short loop trails described here. The Jomeokee Trail lets you completely circle the rock’s base and gaze up its massive cliff faces, while the Sassafras Trail lets you see the whole rock from a distance. The park, which comprises 3700 acres of woods, trails, rock outcrops, and rivers, includes the northern mountain section, plus two river sections surrounding the Yadkin River.
