From the parking area, cross Cascade Lake Road to the trailhead. Take the Corn Mill Shoals Trail for a couple of hundred yards, then go left onto Big Rock Trail. A short climb through tight rhododendron and the trail delivers on its name: a serpentine slab of exposed granite that snakes through pine forest up the mountain. It’s not a severe ascent, but it is a steady one. Because the exposure is relatively narrow, it is easy to follow. Where it widens and you appear to have options, foot-and-a-half-high cairns mark the way. And because you’re traversing exposed rock, there are plenty of good views.
