Take a trip above 6000 feet in North Carolina and you get to take an extra trip—to a Canadian spruce-fir forest. During the last ice age, which ended about ten thousand years ago, spruce-fir forests were common in the Southern Appalachians. But as the weather warmed, those cool-weather forests beat a hasty retreat. Most went north. A few took refuge above 5000 feet. One of those refugee forests is atop Roan Mountain.
