Bent Creek is the twelfth man of this guide, the hike that makes it not by word of mouth or high profile, but because we discovered it. A hike stumbled upon by spotting a bunch of cars parked along a narrow pullout and having a few extra minutes. A hike to exclaim over, “Holy moly! How come I didn’t know about this?” From the parking lot, head down the Deer Lake Lodge Trail on an old macadam footpath. This is an educational forest, meaning there are occasional informative plaques along the way. One of the first tells you that you’re walking through an area that was farmland or pastureland until the turn of the twentieth century. There’s a bit about forest succession, about how the mature pines were harvested in 1967 allowing the oaks, sourwoods, hickories, and red maples to take over.
