The once-dominant longleaf forests began to vanish. Today, only a fraction remain. Finding a good stand of mature longleafs is a rare treat, one you’ll find at the Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve in Southern Pines. The 898-acre preserve is largely the result of the foresightedness of North Carolina author James Boyd’s grandfather. The elder Boyd purchased much of the land in the early twentieth century to spare it from timbering. Today, you can savor Boyd’s preservation effort on nearly 5 miles of hiking trails that explore the tract.
