For twenty years, the map of Raleigh’s greenway system resembled a scattered collection of elbow macaroni: a curve of mile-long trail here, a curve there. By 2000, those random bits of elbow macaroni were piecing together. In 2006, a full-fledged noodle formed. That noodle is an 11-mile stretch of nearly continuous greenway— there’s a small hiccup here and there—that runs from Milburnie Road on the southeast to about 1.5 miles shy of Umstead State Park on the northwest. It’s the second longest stretch of greenway in the Triangle, offering a mostly sylvan walk through the heart of a rapidly growing metropolitan area.

Paved trail, well marked along the creek, hard to find a parking.
