Flower Hill’s steep, north-facing bluffs rise more than 60 feet above Moccasin Creek, creating a cool microclimate for the normally mountain-bound shrub. Flower Hill is acknowledged as the largest stand of Catawba rhododendron in the Coastal Plain, a full geographic zone away from the mountains (the Piedmont lies in between). Though the tract, which was purchased and protected by the Triangle Land Conservancy in 1989, may be small at ten acres, this little curiosity is well worth exploring.
