What immediately stands out at Patsy Pond is the paucity of undergrowth in this savannah environment. Rare is the eastern forest that provides good sight lines, but you will find them here, regardless of season. Which isn’t to say there isn’t any undergrowth. Within the first quarter-mile you’ll encounter small patches of redbay, wax myrtle, and sweetbay. You’ll also likely notice charred tree trunks. The longleaf, like many pines, relies on a good fire every three to five years to reproduce, and controlled burns are common here.

This was interesting and enjoyable. The longest trail, the yellow one, was not well marked. There were lots of intersecting dirt roads with no markers. The blue trail was clearly marked.
