The maritime forest is a rare and disappearing species along the East Coast. One of the best spots to experience a remnant of this natural phenomenon is the Alice Hoffman Nature Trail at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. This trail comes recommended as an educational experience for two reasons. First, it’s short and relatively flat (it climbs a relic sand dune for an elevation gain of 7 feet). Even on a sweltering summer day, this trail is doable. And second, it comes with cheat sheets.
