South of Farmville in Prince Edward County, the 6,496-acre Prince Edward–Gallion State Forest is one of three in Virginia’s rolling Piedmont, each of which envelops a state park with camping (here it’s Twin Lakes).

The designated multiuse trail makes extensive use of gravel forest roads, but miles of earthen doubletrack crisscrossing the forest expand options for the intrepid.

I hiked the Voorhees Nature Preserve with a friend and will definitely be returning to this beautiful site. Including the walk to and from the parking area, it was a total of ~4.25 miles -- mostly on wide wooded paths. There are couple of short strenuous climbs, and the thick carpet of fallen leaves hid loose fallen limbs and exposed roots, so the trail was a bit challenging. A large portion of the trail is on a bluff that overlooks the Rappahannock River. This trail is truly a hidden gem here in eastern Virginia!
