At 8,000-plus acres, Newport News Park is the largest municipal park east of the Mississippi, though large swaths are essentially untrammeled. The loop described here takes in both historical and ecological landmarks. It works well as an introduction for campers—or anyone else—looking to explore the outlying trail network.

Hickory Hollow is an extremely pleasant walk more so than a hike. This is not to take away from the beauty of these trails. The environments one traverses through on this hike epitimise the very nature of the northern neck.
