As Richmond’s bedroom communities sprawl southward, rural Powhatan County seems closer and closer to home. Just west of its namesake county seat, Powhatan Wildlife Management Area (WMA) offers more than a dozen trail miles. This route takes in most of them, passing through low-lying wetlands, hillside hardwood forest, and fields buffered by hedgerows. As you would expect, your prospects for spotting wildlife are good, but you’ll also see rusting machinery and an old cemetery, reminders of the area’s past as timberland and farmland.

The entire nature preserve is closed to the public due to a weak dam crossing. Contact the Nature Conservancy at 434-295-6106 before going. A sign at the trail head says to call 434-951-0579 for information. I am giving it 5 stars for the fact that it is protecting habitat for birds and a rare plant. It's probably best that people are not allowed in there, anyway.
