In the James River, near the heart of the city, Belle Isle is a de rigueur Richmond outing, augmented here by a short stroll around Brown’s Island, itself a popular, park-like destination on the north shore of the James with an amphitheater that hosts summer concerts. For newcomers and lifelong Richmonders alike, these islands reveal much about the city’s industrial and wartime past. Hunting seasons typically begin with bird hunting in September and continue intermittently through February. But don’t let the preceding caveat dissuade you from visiting, particularly if you’re one of the many Chesterfield County residents just half an hour away. In actuality, aquatic wildlife constitutes the main draw at Amelia, and you’ll inevitably spot anglers casting from the shore or from small watercraft. If it’s not hunting season and you hear gunshots, keep in mind the firing ranges northeast of the lake.

Decent beginner trail, but can be confusing due to lack of trail markings. Also beware of ticks--the two of us hiked the entire circuit and pulled 54 ticks off of us despite liberal quantities of DEET.
