We hiked from the trail head on North FS500, near Piedmont and hiked up and over Dugger Mountain. The wilderness area has seen some serious loss of trees and you have to climb over, under and go around many of them. We lost the trail, while dealing with all these fallen trees but thankfully the only hiker we saw that day was there with a GPS unit and found the trail going in the opposite direction from where we we searching. Thank goodness for the lone hiker...his help was and is greatly appreciated.
It is a moderate but intense climb and the few views that we got through the canopy was spectacular. We spent the night at the Choccolocco shelter and hiked to Coleman the next day. The total miles is between 15 and 17 miles. A good two day backpacking trip.
Trail well marked but some sections prior to FS 540 needs some trail maintenance. Overall a great trip from FS 540 to East Dugger. There is alot of stream crossings and some rugged terrain. There is an undocumented shelter located at Chocolocco Lake which was a great surprise! It is not shown on the trail.com map
