A picnic area loop that offers more, this trail mixes meadows with a deep stream drainage, a visit to a century-old cabin, and a wander through scenic forests. Start the hike through a fat- man squeeze by the trail map sign. Strike off across the meadow to the northeast and pass a trail post and a bench. The trail rises into the woods to a signed trail junction on the right at 0.2 mile where a right leads to the picnic area and a restroom visible in the distance. Continue along a splitrail fence, then barbed wire. The trail continues away from the Parkway, dipping along a now-grassy path to a trail junction and a bench on the right at 0.4 mile. Straight ahead, the trail passes more trail posts and dips below then swings left into the Smart View Overlook.

My wife and I went for a easy camping trip and needed a day hike. This trail was very easy. We also had our dachshund and he was able to keep up well. Plan for 2-3 hours at most.

The trail, though short, provided just enough incline to create a nice work-out. The area just south of the trail shelter opened up to a nice view of the lower hills and valley.
