This is a long hike that traverses the wilderness from southeast to northwest and back. The trek is often wet and sometimes steep but never boring. The hike travels five separate trails and tops two separate ridge crests along the way. At 20,000 acres, Otter Creek is the second largest wilderness area in West Virginia. Nearly 40 miles of trails travel this wilderness, making it possible to create day hikes and backpacking trips of various lengths. Campsites dot the main trail along Otter Creek. Otter Creek Wilderness is a favorite among West Virginia hikers. To disperse use, keep group size low and try to visit the area on a weekday, especially in the warmer months. Special attractions: Red spruce forests, high plateau bogs, cascading mountain streams, laurel and rhododendron thickets, snowshoe hare.
