This modified loop is a strenuous traverse of the Bluestone River Gorge. The River Trail travels down the eastern ridge, crosses then follows the river, and finally climbs the western ridge. The Farley Ridge Trail brings the hiker back down to the river in a hurry. From the river, the tram can be taken back to the trailhead or you can hike back via the River Trail. Pipestem Resort State Park is a multi-dimensional vacation destination that can either test or pamper you. Encompassing the plateau and valley of the Bluestone River Gorge, the state park is ruggedly beautiful. There are 17.8 miles of trails that wind together for hiking, biking, or cross-country skiing trips for all experience levels. Trails vary from 0.2 to 6.2 miles and from virtually flat to aerobically steep. A dip in the swimming pool will be just the thing to relieve those trail-tired muscles. Eighteen-hole and par 3 golf courses will try your skills on non-hiking days. Although many campsites are available, two lodges and restaurants provide romantic evenings when you want to leave your sleeping bag at home. Special attractions: Deep river gorge and high, rocky vistas.
