A physically easy hike made difficult by winding, branching trails. Most visitors to the New River Gorge National River congregate near the New River Bridge area, where climbing and rafting dominate, and where cliff-side trails sport magnificent views of the valley. Farther away from the crowds, the “extreme” nature of the gorge is toned down but the beauty of one of the planet’s oldest rivers still remains. Kates Plateau and Polls Plateau are two loop hikes through upland forest and old farmland. The majority of the hike is along an old farm road. The grade is generally easy; the difficulty lies in staying on the trail. The combination of crisscrossed farm roads and a severe lack of blazes makes route finding in this area a challenge. A rule of thumb: When in doubt, follow the most worn path. It is suggested that only experienced hikers tackle this trail, allowing extra time for the inevitable backtrack after a wrong turn. It wouldn’t hurt to take along a flashlight too. Special attractions: Quiet forests, rhododendron tunnels.
