Kates Mountain Loop offers panoramic vistas and steep, difficult climbs. The Greenbrier State Forest is located in the southeastern corner of the state, encompassing an area of approximately 5,100 acres. The clear flowing Harts Run borders the western region of the forest. Kates Mountain (3,200 feet) is the region’s dominant geographical feature. This ridge climbs rapidly from Harts Run to the ridge crest. The forest is composed almost entirely of the eastern deciduous forest species. There are pockets of hemlock and cove hardwoods in sheltered coves. Greenbrier State Forest offers a wide variety of recreational activities, including approximately 13.5 miles of hiking trails. Trail difficulty ranges from easy family hikes to very strenuous ridge climbs. All the trails are well marked and maintained. Special attractions: Kates Mountain Loop is a challenging circuit trail with several excellent views along Kates Mountain.
