The Sandy Spring Underground Railroad Trail, part of the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom program, commemorates the involvement of Montgomery County residents in the Underground Railroad and celebrates the Quaker heritage and traditions of the Sandy Spring community. Hikers can follow the interpretive signs or join a guided hike with “conductors” who teach survival techniques used by escaping slaves. Guided hikes are offered April–November on Saturdays. Start your hike by parking in the lot next to the Sandy Spring Meeting House. Walk along a paved road until you see the trailhead on a gravel path. Enter the trailhead via a gravel path with farms on either side, and walk until you come to an open pasture thick with grass and old-growth trees dating back to the 1700s.
