The close-in Potomac River Island is a self-contained parkland with impressive views of Georgetown and Rosslyn. It features the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial and nature preserve, along with a picturesque boardwalk through wetlands and other trails. Metro-area hikers owe Theodore Roosevelt a grateful nod. During Roosevelt’s 1901–09 presidency, the country got a forest service and wildlife-refuge system, and the metro area had a hiker in the White House. This 2.8-mile, hill-less hike, managed by the National Park Service, loops through the scenic parklands that surround the memorial. Trail signs are few, but the area is so small, you can’t get lost for long.
