You literally follow in Daniel Boone’s footsteps on this hike. In 2001 and 2002 the park service restored Cumberland Gap to its original contour and invited visitors to get a taste of the pioneer experience. This walk—a good one for children—takes you through the gap and up to a ridgetop where the states of Kentucky,Tennessee, and Virginia meet. Cumberland Gap was an important eighteenth-century doorway through the Appalachian Mountains for settlers on their way westward. In the twentieth century the gap continued as a major transportation route, but one covered in asphalt. For decades US 25E, a key north–south highway, ran smack through this storied mountain notch.
