On top of the pretty hills, hollows, and streams you expect to find in the Ozark landscapes, Washington State Park is also rich in both history and prehistory. The rustic cabins, lodge, headquarters, overlook shelters, and rough-hewn stone trail steps were built by a Civilian Conservation Corps company in the 1930s, and long before the CCC artisans made their mark here, the park’s prehistoric inhabitants carved twothirds of Missouri’s known petroglyphs on rock outcrops in the park’s 1,875 acres. While these are the features that landed Washington State Park on the National Register of Historic Places, the park’s natural beauty is pretty good too. Dolomite bluffs tower over a picnic ground nestled in a bend of the Big River, and winding trails lead to spectacular overlooks of the river valley.
