The Blue Ridge of northern Virginia have none of the 4,000-foot-plus heights so plentiful on the Appalachian Trail farther south. Still, the northern Virginia leg is one exhausting climb after another. On open mountain balds, views drop west onto the Great Valley. The bumpy spine of the Blue Ridge runs southward, and to the east lie the rolling meadows of Virginia’s hunt country. Come fall and winter, the mountains here harbor quiet moments, interrupted occasionally by the thrashing of birds foraging among the hornbeam, dogwood, spicebush, and sassafras.

Two hostels not to miss--Bear's Den and the Blackburn Center. Bears Den w/way-cool lodge atmosphere to hang and luck up on evening meal& breakfast at the big table. Stories flow/excellent hospitality. Blackburn solar shower was down, but sittin on the porch there with the view is memorable. Thru hikers (05)givin up the hospitality, but steps or switchbacks to get down there (park the pack, trot down!). Couple of tent spots with fire rings between Keys Gap and Harpers Ferry about 3 miles so. of the bridge across the Shen. River.

Quiet, beautiful, well-maintained. We hiked from Chester Gap to Linden, the first 8 miles. It took us about 4 hours.
