“The mountains of the Blue Ridge, and of these the Peaks of Otter, are thought to be of a greater height, measured from their base, than any others in our country, and perhaps in North America.” So said Thomas Jefferson in his only book, Notes on the State of Virginia. Given his expertise in architecture, law, politics, languages, and other fields, we’ll have to forgive this bit of overstatement regarding the relative heights of Sharp Top and Flat Top, which stand at 3,875 feet and 4,001 feet, respectively. Given the manner in which they stand apart so geographically from their surroundings, it’s easy to see how Charlottesville’s favorite son could have embellished their stature a bit.

The best trail consisted of a 2.5 mile hike up the mountain (you will be pushing your bike up 2.3 of it) followed by a fast rockey 6+ mile downhill section that makes the hike up more that worth it. I did the loop 2 times in one day. It takes about 2 hours, mabey a bit more or alot less if don't use your brakes on the way down much.
