The main attraction at Occoneechee State Park is the 48,000-acre John H. Kerr Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake. It is Virginia’s largest lake. The park hugs the shoreline in the shadow of the Virginia–North Carolina boundary. Boaters and anglers alike flock to this lake, which is regarded highly for the quantity and size of its largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and perch. Canoe, kayak, and paddleboat rentals are available on summer weekends Memorial Day–Labor Day.
