An inspiring venture along an easy trail provides insights into Shenandoah’s history and wildlife. Begin your hike by walking down the fire road, which proceeds in an easterly direction and crosses the Appalachian Trail in 0.1 mile. In 0.2 mile the road approaches the Pocosin Cabin, one in a chain of cabins that serve hikers using the AT. The cabins are managed by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) and are available for rent. To visit the cabin (if unoccupied), turn right onto the side path. Continue along the fire road, which begins a slight descent. Throughout the spring and summer—and sometimes into the fall—wildflowers flank the trail. Look for columbine in late spring and milkweed in summer.
