The 5,954-acre Lost Cove and 7,350-acre Harper Creek tracts are wilderness study areas in what’s often called the Wilson Creek drainage of Pisgah National Forest. Lying below Grandfather Mountain, between US 321 to the north, NC 181 to the south, and NC 90 to the east, this vast area is perhaps North Carolina’s largest contiguous area of unpaved roads.
Just the drive to the trailhead is one of the best mountain
experiences a visitor can have. Wilson Creek was named a National Wild and Scenic River in 2000, and the Wilson Creek Visitor Center was built in 2002 on the Brown Mountain Beach Road near Mortimer and Edgemont. Truly grand Wilson Creek Gorge offers kayakers and rafters up to Class IV rapids. Some of the state’s biggest, most spectacular waterfalls hide in surrounding woods. There’s also great mountain biking in this endless ripple of ridges.
