We hiked this trail walking from the cruise dock as far as the junction with the Granite Creek Trail on a beautiful day, and would strongly recommend it to anyone on a cruise ship who wants to get away from the crowds. Gold Creek was running fast with runoff and was beautiful. Recommend taking the short side trail to the top of Ebner Falls just beyond the Mt. Juneau Trail junction.
We also took the spur trail to the Glory Hole (about a mile). The trail has obviously been improved since the guide was written although the spur trail sign says something like "Red Mill Trail." Follow that and in a half-mile or so it will divide with a sign that says "Glory Hole View .4 mile." The viewpoint area is now fenced.
We returned via the Flume Trail, which is accessed via a brdige by the small dam along Basin Road. This was an interesting way to return, but be aware it brings you out further from the cruise dock in a residential neighbrohood. Follow your nose downhill (take the steps when you find them), then veer inland to cross Gold Creek, and then continue on down past the Governor's Mansion. But as long as you head down and south you will eventually get back to the cruise dock.
