The Audubon Naturalist Society’s Woodend Sanctuary is a 40-acre oasis in heavily populated southern Montgomery County. The Wells family gave the land and Georgian-style mansion to the ANS in 1968. Today, both are used for special functions and as an environmental education center for kids and adults. The facility and organization host master naturalist classes for adults and a preschool, camps, and field trips for children. The property is organized to provide many teachable moments about the plants and animals that inhabit this tract of green space in an urban area. The Woodend Sanctuary is a great place for you and your kids to visit nature even if you can spare only a half hour.
