Though the tallest landmark in the area, Gray Butte is nearly always overshadowed by the beauty and popularity of nearby Smith Rock State Park. Overlooking Gray Butte, however, is a mistake. Not only does the area provide wonderful solitude on the trails, but parking is never an issue, nor are park fees. A combination of well-worn horse and mountain trails, combined with a bit of gavel road, makes for an excellent loop with an opportunity for 360-degree views around the butte. Plus, you get to see what many park goers never see at Smith Rock—the back side of it.
