The Tumalo Canal Historic Area (TCHA) is a recently built trail network developed adjacent to the Maston area, which has quickly become a popular winter mountain biking destination. Whereas Maston welcomes bikers and runners alike, the TCHA is pedestrian-only to help preserve the historic remains of the canals for which it’s named. The trail system is well marked by 12 numbered posts throughout the area, and many loop options are possible. Be forewarned, however, that although the canal trails and main outer loop are wide and flowy, the connector trails (specifically 4–5, 6–7, and 11-12) can have many quick and jagged turns, making for an interesting (and possibly slightly disruptive) leg of the run. These trails are best during the winter months as well, as the sandy bottoms of the former canals soften up and make for difficult, sandy runs in the warmer months.
