The Oregon Badlands Wilderness formed in a unique way. The main lava tube that supplied lava ?ow to the Badlands ruptured, and eventually the errant lava built up the giant shield volcano that today we call the Badlands.
The landscape consists of in?ated lava, volcanic ash, and pumice, and sagebrush dotted with mature juniper trees. High Desert ?ora and ancient volcanic geology combine to create an otherworldly feel in a beautiful but desolate area just a quick drive from Bend.
