Another important stop for migrating birds along the Central Flyway, San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge plays hosts to hundreds of them each year. This walk along the levee system that forms long reservoirs offers birders and hikers a chance to view them up close and personal.
Look at a map of the Texas Gulf Coast, and you’ll notice one thing: From Freeport to the Louisiana state line, the coast is wall-to-wall national wildlife refuges, all established with one thing in mind, to provide a stopover for the hundreds of species of migrating birds that fly through the area on what is called the Central Flyway. The Flyway is an area generally from the Rocky Mountains to the Great Plains and the western Gulf of Mexico.
