Maramec Spring trails are great for families and history bu?s. The fascinating history of Maramec Iron Works complements the spring’s natural beauty. Portions of the paved paths take you through an outdoor museum of the Maramec Iron Works. Thomas James, an Ohio businessman, began construction in 1826, and then in 1843 he sent his son William James to operate the ironworks. Begin this hike at the parking lot for the Maramec Iron Works Museum next to Maramec Spring. Follow a sign pointing you to the right (south) to Maramec Spring. A series of wheelchair-accessible paved paths is in the area of the spring. You’ll use both paved and dirt paths for this loop hike. Walk next to a cedar split rail fence and past a trail information box that might have brochures if you’re visiting in season. During winter, you’ll likely have the spring to yourself.
