A peaceful amble through the site of one of New York’s most volatile and important Revolutionary War battles. This fairly short hike follows a ridgeline named for the Sullivan Campaign, a lesser-known (at least, outside of New York) but critical segment of the United States’ defense against British troops during the Revolutionary War. Iroquois Confederacy soldiers fighting on the side of the English Crown met their match here at Newtown as they joined with Loyalist rangers and Redcoats to take on the Continental Army. The battle raged up and down Sullivan’s Hill, terrain covered with pine and shrub oak and sloping more than 600 feet down from the crest of the rise. You may be pleased to know that this hike does not range very far up and down the hill; instead it follows just below the top of the hill and circles back on the edge of the central battleground.
