Visit the site of a seventeenth- century Native American village and learn how the Seneca people found many everyday uses for the plants that grow here naturally. The Earth Is Our Mother Trail is part of the self-guided Medicine Walk here at
Ganondagan, and one of the most fascinating trails in the greater Rochester area. Its mile-long meander takes you down a gentle slope to Great Brook while providing an intriguing lesson in the native plants the Seneca used for food, medicine, and the creation of household goods.
Plaques identify more than twenty plants and trees along
the route, providing their names in English and in Seneca, with a quick overview of the uses the native peoples found for each species. While the plaques make it easy to spot these plants and trees, we do recommend that you bring a field guide with you.
