This shady natural area once erupted in battle between British and American troops and the Mohawk Indians. This little gem of a park is within the boundaries of the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, an area preserved by the National Park Service for its historic and natural value. Minisink Battleground is managed by Sullivan County, but like so many properties within national park boundaries that maintain their local oversight, it benefits from the park service’s supervision as well as the involvement of passionate local professionals and volunteers. Your walk along the Battleground Trail takes you through the story of a Revolutionary War battle with a cast of characters who may not be household names outside this local area—but who were critical to the fight for and against independence in southern New York.
