Where the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers meet, the shirt and collar industry once dominated the US textile market. Steeped in industrial history but most popular for its terrific views of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, Peebles Island is a favorite hiking ground for residents of Troy and the smaller towns north of Albany. It’s no wonder that this place draws visitors at any time of day and in every season. A wilderness on the edge of a formerly major manufacturing district, the island offers 191 acres of respite from the largely commercialized areas that surround it. The dense woods lead you to high bluffs over the Mohawk River, where the town of Waterford is visible just across the water. As the path continues, a series of islands come into view: Bock, Goat, Polderump, and Second Islands appear on the west side of Peebles Island, along with one of the many dams built to prevent major flooding in central New York’s numerous wet seasons.
