This easy, mostly flat hike begins at an open park-like setting where there are picnic tables placed in the shade of huge trees that rise alongside Pennypack Creek. You start out on the paved hiking/biking trail where, at this point, there are just as many walkers, bike riders, dog walkers, and parents pushing strollers as there are serious hikers, sporting colorful backpacks and opaque water bottles. As is often the case at popular trails, the farther you hike the less company you’ll have, especially on this hike when just under a mile you leave the trail for a forest footpath and a short uphill climb through the forest. This section is also an equestrian trail, where proper trail etiquette dictates that hikers should step off the trail and give the horse and its rider the right-of-way.
